Have you ever been watching a girl’s game of lacrosse and wondered: What are all the lines on the field? How do they affect play? How long are the games? Why did the Ref blow the whistle? What call did the Ref make? Why are the girls dropping their sticks? Why doesn’t the Defense jam up the front of the net? What are the green, yellow and red cards for?
This short booklet will answer all these questions and more in spectator friendly language.  The following excerpt from the booklet gives an example of how the penalties that are most frequently called are explained and the signal the Ref will use to indicate the call.
2. In the ‘Sphere’ (major foul) RULE:  The sphere is an invisible 7 inch bubble around a player’s head. A player may not reach into or through the sphere of any opponent.  Violation of the rule is usually called on Defensive players.
WHAT’S THE PURPOSE OF THE RULE:  Protect the head, face and neck of the players.  While this foul is usually called on defensive players, it can also be called on a player whose team is on the offense if she puts her stick into the sphere of an opposing player.
WHAT YOU WILL SEE:  A defensive player is guarding a player aggressively and the defensive player’s stick comes within 7 inches of her opponent’s head.  This also occurs often when the defensive player is attempting to check the stick of the ball carrier.
The booklet is $10 and will be available as a downloadable PDF file.  All proceeds are use to promote Girl’s Lacrosse in the Freehold area.
